age 21 I changed my job, to take up a position as an Engineering Designer at
Rolls Royce Aero Engines Limited.
As
a part qualified Mechanical Engineer getting a job was easy.

was full employment and I simply sent a letter of enquiry to the Rolls Royce
Human Resources Department with an outline of my background and
qualifications stating the type of job I was looking for and after a
successful interview I was taken on.
With
full employment and qualified labor scarce there was no need for a resume,
which is so very different from now.
It
would be pointless approaching a job search as I did back then, today your
resume is vital for getting a new job.
My
experiences soon brought me face to face with the harsh realities of
un-employment.
Rolls
Royce went into a cost reduction program 10 months after I joined, and cut
3,000 jobs. When I was not on the initial ‘to go’ list I thought I was
OK.
This
secure feeling soon changed when the Draughtsman’s Union (of which I was a
member) insisted on ‘last in first out’, and another guy, the next
in-line was re-instated making me redundant.
This
major shock set me back in terms of my paying the bills, but the effect on my
self-confidence was a shaker.
With
no
experience of job search and where to start. I registered at the Labor
Exchange to draw the measly dole and try to get a new job, without success.
Being
young, optimistic and naďve I even went knocking on the doors of local
engineering businesses to see if they needed a promising young Engineer. That
didn’t work either.
I
was not only naďve but totally un-prepared for any success in the jobs
market.
Luck
came to my help because the embarrassed management at Rolls Royce recommended
me to one of their key suppliers and after another successful interview I
restarted my career by re-locating to a new area and joining the new firm.
I’m
convinced without that help I would have really struggled to get a new job as
I didn’t now how to do a resume or how to search the jobs market.
My

the objective of aiming for General Management I looked for openings in
Newspaper Ads., that would lead to advancement.
When
it came time for me to do a resume to make a written job application I
didn’t know where to start. Trying to do a resume because of say redundancy
the pressure would have been intolerable.
As it
was my application had to be done quickly.
As a young ambitious engineer wanting to break
into management the prospect of trying to do a first resume was a problem and
to meet the challenge I bought a book.
Armed with this new friend my first resume
took the whole of one weekend to complete and after making many revisions
with the help of a neighbor to type it out (there were no PC’s back then)
the job application was sent off.
After all of this time I can’t really
remember too much about that first resume.
I do remember;
Giving details of my education
Describing work experience in reverse
chronological order
And, in the cover letter trying to give some
rational reason for the change I was seeking with reasons why.
The job application must have been OK because
out of 64 applicants for this more commercially oriented job ten were called
for interview. My interview went well and the final short list of three
included me.
After a second interview my application
failed. As I was trying to move to a more commercial role there were other
candidates whose experience was better suited to the employer.
Despite some feelings of disappointment over
the result that first resume was a success because of what it achieved during
my first serious attempt to advance my career.
What I am clear about is that at that time I
had;
With the success of that first job application
I had been able to make my needs match the requirements of the potential new
employer through my resume and cover letter. Which is vital for any
successful job application.
There are three essential factors to cover in
your plan as you approach any job application;
1.
Decide if the job is what you really want and that it will meet your
needs, strategically, financially and in terms of job satisfaction.
2.
Fully and comprehensively understand what the potential employer is
telling you they need.
3.
Try as near as you can to honestly match their needs and in your
application show that you understand what they want.
With further development and updating that
resume served me well because it was adapted and modified for applications
for progressively more senior posts leading to a number of CEO positions in
Blue Chip businesses.

‘recruiter’ and read many resumes. I can tell you from direct experience
some resumes are terrible. If they are not well presented and well laid out
you only scan them and discard them.
